Frequently Asked Questions
What does Jenny Alison Casting do?
Jenny Alison Casting provides background casting for scripted film and television, TV show audiences, commercials, and music videos.
What is a background actor?
A background actor — sometimes called an “extra” — is a non-speaking performer in film or television. They may be featured in close-up scenes or appear as part of large crowd scenes.
Do I need experience to be a background actor?
Not at all! We love first-timers. That said, actors with on-set experience may have an advantage in some situations.
How do I submit for a casting call?
Follow our Facebook page for the most up-to-date casting calls. Please read and follow all submission instructions carefully, even if you're already in our database. We don’t want to follow up for information that was already requested!
Why don’t you just cast using your database?
While we do maintain a database, we’ve found that it’s much more efficient when talent submits directly to each casting call. Reaching out individually to check availability takes up valuable time and often delays the process. When you submit, we know immediately that you’re available, interested, and ready to work on that specific day — which helps us (and productions) move faster.
What is expected of me on set as a background actor?
Professionalism is KEY. Stay aware of your surroundings, follow directions from the Assistant Directors (ADs), and always conduct yourself respectfully. Even if you're excited to be there, it’s important to stay focused and professional.
Why do you send so many email updates?
Because your time matters as much as anyone else's on set. I want to make sure you're informed and prepared before you arrive. Open communication helps everything run smoothly.
Why don’t you send call times and locations until the day before a booking?
In film and TV, schedules are fluid. Each day’s schedule depends on how filming goes the day before. We often don’t receive call times until the late afternoon or evening prior. This is why it’s crucial to check your email regularly the day before your booking.
Why do I need full-day availability on the day I'm booked?
Due to union rules and filming logistics, start and end times can shift. Your availability helps ensure production stays on schedule, even with unexpected changes.
Can I take photos or video on set?
No. We ask that you never take photos or video while on set. Most productions require you to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), and taking photos or videos is a serious violation of that agreement. Failing to follow set rules — including this one — can result in being sent home and not being considered for future bookings.
How will I be paid for my work?
Payment is handled by the production company — not by Jenny Alison Casting. However, if you have payment issues, email booking@jennyalisoncasting.com and I’ll do my best to help. On larger productions, payment typically takes 10-14 business days. Be sure to keep your voucher and consider taking a photo of it at wrap for your records.
What kind of ID do I need to bring to get paid?
You must present valid ID that proves you’re legally allowed to work in the U.S.
Acceptable combinations include:
An unexpired U.S. passport, OR
A valid driver’s license and Social Security card

How does your casting process work?
Our job is to bring the director’s vision to life. For example, if a scene takes place at a country club, we’ll look for background actors who fit that environment. Every detail helps tell the story.
What are the best types of photos to submit?
When submitting photos for a casting call—especially for background or extra work—clear, natural, and professional-looking photos are key. Casting directors want to see what you actually look like, not heavily edited or overly styled versions.
📸 Best Types of Photos to Submit:
1. Headshot (Straight-On)
*This does not need to be a professional headshot.
Framing: Shoulders up, looking straight into the camera.
Expression: Natural, neutral or a slight smile (unless otherwise requested).
Lighting: Even, natural lighting. Avoid shadows or filters.
Background: Simple (like a blank wall).
2. Full Body Shot
Framing: Head to toe, standing naturally.
Clothing: Fitted but casual clothing that shows your body shape (no costumes).
Shoes: Include them unless otherwise noted.
3. Profile Shot (Optional)
Side view of your face and body can be useful, especially if requested.
Helps show your full range of angles.
Do you book speaking roles?
Very rarely. Our focus is on background (non-speaking) casting.
What does “new faces” mean in a casting call?
In a casting call, "new faces" typically means the production is looking for people who have not yet appeared on camera in this particular project—even as background actors or extras.
Here's what that means for you:
If you’ve already worked on the project (even in a small role or as an extra), you’re not eligible unless your previous appearance was completely unnoticeable or your look has significantly changed.
This helps maintain continuity—for example, someone who appeared as a nurse in a hospital scene shouldn’t show up again in a different role like a diner customer, because attentive viewers might recognize them.
So, “new faces” = not previously used or seen in any scene for that project.
I’m looking for representation. Do you represent talent?
No — Jenny Alison Casting does NOT represent talent. We are hired by productions to cast background actors for specific projects. If you’re seeking representation, we recommend reaching out to a licensed talent agent in your area.
Is Jenny Alison Casting hiring casting assistants?
No, we are not hiring at this time.
I submitted for a casting call but never heard back. Why?
We receive hundreds of submissions per call. Unfortunately, we can't respond to everyone. If you're a fit for a role, we’ll reach out!
